Lubbock is a city in and county seat of Lubbock County, Texas, United States. The city is located in the northwestern part of the state, a region historically and geographically known as the Estacado Llano and is ecologically part of the southern end of the Highlands. The Lubbock nickname, "Shaft City", derives from it being the multicultural economic, education, and healthcare center of the region, north of the Permian Basin and south of the Texas Panhandle, commonly Called the southern plains. The area is the largest contiguous cotton region in the world and depends to a large extent on the water extracted from the Ogallala Aquifer for irrigation. Lubbock was selected as the 12th best place to start a small business by CNNMoney.com. CNN mentioned the traditional business environment of the city: low rent for commercial spaces, central location and cooperative government of the city. Lubbock is home to Texas Tech University, the sixth largest college by enrollment in the state. Lubbock High School has been recognized for three consecutive years by Newsweek as one of the best high schools in the United States based on its international baccalaureate program.
